The Times, Tuesday, Jan 28, 1941 OBITUARY Mr. W. Melville Wills A BENEFACTOR OF BRISTOL Mr. W. Melville Wills has died at Killian-by Kyle, Ross-shire, at the age of 79. His home was at Bracken Hill, Leigh Woods, Bristol. The fifth son of the late Mr. Henry Overton Wills, one of the founders of the tobacco firm of W. D. and H. O. Wills, he joined the firm in 1887, and when the business was turned into a limited liability company he was one of the managing directors with his brothers Mr. G. A. Wills and the late Mr. H. H. Wills. After the formation of the Imperial Tobacco Company he continued as managing director up to the time of his retirement in 1912, since then he has occupied a seat on the board of directors of the Imperial Tobacco Company. He was one of Bristol's greatest benefactors and will be remembered in particular for his great work for Bristol Homoeopathic Hospital, which he built as a memorial to his son Captain R. Bruce Wills, who was killed in the last War. His gifts to this hospital amounted to over £250,000. In 1932 the Rockefeller foundation offered the sum of £50,000 to the University of Bristol for the endowment of research in physics on condition that a further £25,000 was secured from other sources. Mr. Wills, already a benefactor of the university, offered the necessary £25,000 in memory of his brother, Mr. H. H. Wills, who founded the physics laboratory at the university at a cost of £200,000.

The Times, Monday, May 15, 1865 D. Wills, J.P. for Bristol Fatal Accident, - Mr. W. D. Wills, J.P. for Bristol, late deputy-chairman of the Bristol and Exeter Railway Company, and head of the well-known firm of W.D. and H.O. Wills and Sons, tobacco manufacturers, of Bristol, died on Saturday at St Bartholomew's Hospital, from the effects of an accident he met with on the previous Thursday evening. Mr. Wills was in London attending the May meetings of various religious societies, in which he took an interest, and on Thursday evening was crossing at the foot of Snow-hill when he was knocked down by an omnibus. The driver called out, but Mr. Wills did not hear him, and the horses could not be stopped before the forewheel had passed over both his legs below the knee, inflicting compound fractures on each. His left leg was most severely crushed, in addition, by the pressure of the drag, which was on the hind wheel. Mr. Wills requested to be removed to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and on his arrival at that institution Mr Holmes Coote found it necessary immediately to amputate his left leg below the knee. The deceased gentleman bore the operation very well, and hopes were entertained of his recovery. He, however, gradually sank, and, as already stated, died in the course of Saturday. Mr. Wills was much esteemed by all classes of his fellow citizens. The Times, Tuesday, May 16, 1865 DEATHS On the 13th inst, at Bartholomew's Hospital, from the effects of a sever accident, W. D. Notes:
Living with them in 1881 were their nieces Janet S.G. Stancomb and Yda E.M. Stancomb aged 27 and 25 William was created a baronet in 1892. He was the key player in the forming of The Imperial Tobacco Company in 1901, and became it's chairman, a position he held until his death in 1911. Sir William was elevated to Baron Winterstoke of Blagdon in 1906, and was then referred to as Lord Winterstoke. The Times Monday, January 30, 1911 OBITUARY Lord Winterstoke We regret to announce that Lord Winterstoke (Sir William Henry Wills) died suddenly at his residence, Blagdon Lodge, near Bristol, early yesterday morning in his 81st year. He appeared to have been in his usual health lately, and only on Saturday he was out on his estate and had a parade of horses entered for forthcoming shows. When he retired there was nothing unusual in his appearance, but at about 3 o'clock yesterday morning he summoned his niece, Miss Stancombe Wills, whom he informed that his breathing, which had troubled him of late, was very difficult. A doctor was sent for and arrived at 5 o'clock. Although everything was done to relieve the patient he died shortly afterwards from heart failure. Lord Winterstoke was the only son of Mr. William Day Wills, one of the founders of the tobacco firm of Messrs. W. D. and H. O. Wills, and was born in September, 1830. After being educated at Mill Hill School and the London University he gave up his intention of going to the Bar and joined his father in the great tobacco business at Bristol. He took an active part in local affairs and was made a Justice of the Peace so long ago as 1866, and was therefore one of the senior members of the Bench. He became a prominent member of the local Liberal Party and was president of the Anchor Society in 1864. In 1880 he was elected to Parliament for Coventry, which he represented until 1885, when that borough lost one of it's members. From 1894 to 1900 he sat for South Bristol. He served as Sheriff of Bristol and was appointed Deputy-Lieutenant of Somerset. He was created a baronet in 1892 and raised to the peerage in 1905. Sir William Henry Wills, as he was then, was chief mover in the formation of the Imperial Tobacco Company, the head offices of which are at Bristol, and he retained the position of chairman to the time of his death. The company was formed in 1901 to acquire the business of 13 tobacco manufacturing concerns in the United Kingdom, and the magnitude of the operation is shown by the fact that the total consideration for the purchase was £11,957,000. In the following year other businesses were acquired, and the "combine," as it was known in the trade, acquired a large interest in two important companies. For many years, too, Lord Winterstoke had been a director of the Great Western Railway Company and also of the Bristol Waterworks Company and the Phoenix Assurance Company. He was one of the founders of the London Missionary Society and the British and Foreign Bible Society. He spent most of his time at Blagdon, where he bred Shire horses and Shorthorn stock, which have taken many prizes at the leading shows. Lord Winterstoke has made munificent gifts to Bristol, including it's art gallery, and contributed £35,000 to the Formation Fund of the local university, of which he was pro-Chancellor. He gave liberally to religious, educational, and charitable institutions, not only at Bristol, but also in London and elsewhere. His last gift, announced a few days ago, was £5,000 to the scheme for enlarging Bristol General Hospital. He presented the city with a statue of Edmund Burke, which was unveiled by Lord Rosebery. He presented valuable organs to the Colston Hall and to Bristol Grammer School, Mansfield College, Oxford, and Mill Hill School, to the centenary fund of which he gave £10,000. He married in 1853 Elizabeth, daughter of John Stancombe, of Trowbridge, who died in 1896, and leaves no heir. The Times Saturday, Febuary 18, 1911 LORD WINTERSTOKE'S ESTATE The will with five codicils of Lord WInterstoke of Blagden, who died on January 29, has been carried in for probate at the Principal Registry by the executors, Mr. George Alfred Wills, and Mr. Frank William Wills, his cousins, and Mr. William John Mann and Mr. WIlliam Rennie, the estate being provisionally sworn at £1,000,000, so far as at present can be ascertained. Lord Winterstoke entailed his Coombe Lodge estate at Blagdon and all other his Somersetshire estates on Mr. George Alfred Wills, and devised East Court, St. Lawrence-on-Sea, to Miss Stancomb Wills for life, and then to Mr. G. A. Wills as part of the entail. His London residence in Hyde Park Gardens and his yacht Sabrina he bequeathed to Miss Wills for life. After specifically bequeathing his furniture and effects, and giving various annuities and legacies to relatives, friends, dependants, and servants, he left his residuary estate on trust, the income of one-half to be paid to Miss Stancomb WIlls for life and of the other half to Mrs. Richardson for life (his adopted daughters); and subject thereto his residuary estate is divided - as to two fourth parts between Messrs. Arthur John Grahame Stancomb and Frederick William Stancomb and their sister Mrs. Burton; as to another fourth part to Mr. Frank William Wills; and as to the remaining fourth part to Messrs. Henry Wills Gunn and Ernest Henry Mayo Gunn equally. One of the codicils confirms a donation of £25,000 to Bristol University in addition to a previous gift of £10,000, both of which sums were paid in Lord Winterstoke's lifetime; and another codicil directs his executors to discharge any claim for estate duty in respect of gifts made within three years of his death at the cost of his personal estate, rather than allow the recipiants to be called upon to pay such duty. 1871 Census RG10-2545 3 April 1871 Clifton, Bristol, Gloucestershire Hawthornden House William H. Notes:
the 1891 census has aunt Harriet Fitch b.1815 present todo: Somebody on the web thinks there was a son James b1830 Info from http://members.cox.net/ggthomp/jameswinton.html He joined the North Middlesex Militia on 26 March 1798, as 25 years of age. James was a widower when he married Fanny Hughes in 1821 in London. His PRO document WO25/778 was signed by him on the 15th of December 1828 as Lt. Half pay 17th Reg of Infantry upon the old reduced Establishment of Two Shillings and Half Pence per Diem. There is also a note, "I am desirous of service provided I am promoted Captain of the company or paymaster of the regiment in line so that I may be able to support myself my wife and young family". At this time he was aged 55 years. Enclosed with the WO25/778 was a loose hand written document signed by James Winton illustrating his military career, a sort of CV, applying for a full time Army posting. This seems to be a turning point in his life. As if his first choice was the army and the second France. A copy of this document follows. Lieutenant James Winton Schedule of Documents and Commissions stating the Services and good conduct of James Winton Lieutenant Half Pay 17th Regiment of Infantry. He was appointed Ensign in the North Middlesex Militia (No. 1 -26th March 1798) where he remained until he was promoted to a Lieutenants Commission (No. 1-23rd June 1798) in the 3rd Regiment of Essex Militia in which he continued until the general volunteering into the line when he obtained an Ensigney in the 17th Regiment of foot (No.2-11th August 1799) and went apon the expedition to Holland. And in consequence of his commanding a Company (after the Captain was severely wounded) in the Battle of the 19th of September 1799. The Commander in Chief His Royal Highness the Duke of York was pleased to promote him to a Lieutenancy signed in the field of battle (No. 2-October 1799). After their return from Holland he sailed in the year 1800 with the said 17th Regiment to the Mediterranean where he remained two years and during the expedition to Egypt and he continued in the same Regiment until the General Reduction at the conclusion of the then war when he was (against his inclination) placed with many other officers on the half pay list. (No 3-26th April 1803) is a letter from Lieut. Colonel Tinling 17th Regiment in answer to his application for a District Adjutancy during the peace. Upon the recommencement of hostilities he was offered Commissions in the Norfolk, Essex and London Militia Regiments and also the appointment of Paymaster to 7th Battalion Royal Army of Reserve (No.4&5- letters from Colonel Robinson 23rd August and 26th September 1803). He was also offered the Adjutancy to the 2nd Battalion of the Shropshire Militia (No. 6- 14th August 1803), which he accepted. He also obtained the Brevet rank of Captain in the said 2nd Salop Militia (No. 7-8th June 1803). (No.8- Field Officers Letters 1804,1805,1806,1807) From Colonel Lyster, Lieut. Colonel Sir Stephen Glynn Bart., Lieut. Colonel Whitemore MP and Lieut. Colonel Leighton who were the field officers in the said 2nd Salop Militia which will prove the respectable estimation he was held by them. (No.9- 29th August 1805) Is Colonel Lysters recommendation to Colonel Jeffery to whose Regiment he was appointed immediately after becoming a Reduced Adjutant of the 2nd Salop Militia the same being incorporated with the 1st Battalion in consequence of the volunteering into the Line. (No.10- 9th October 1805 2nd Dorset Volunteers) is his Adjutant Commission signed by the Earl of Dorchester where he continued until 24th December 1806 when he resigned and was then employed under the authority of the Commander in Chief as extra Recruiting Officer in the London District until he was appointed Adjutant to the 3rd Cambridgeshire Regiment of Volunteer Infantry. And for his exertions (as far as it was practicable in that Corps) he had the honour of receiving Lieut. Colonel Sir Edward Baynes Approbation expressed at the head of the Regiment after the inspection whilst on permanent duty at Huntingdon. (No.11- 4th June 1808) is a paragraph in the Cambridge Chronicle. And also had the honour and pleasing gratification of being presented by the Officers of the said Corps with a very valuable sabre as a testimonial of his good conduct (No.12- 8th October 1808) in the Cambridge Chronicle. NB the Commissions and Documents above referred to (by No.) are now in the office of the Commander in Chief or are returned to my Agent Mss Vacher, 29, Parliament Street where they may be procured to verify this statement if required. Signed James Winton Lieut. 1/2 Pay 17th Infty 9th December 1828. He also records the children as...
