HARE, Lilah Mary |
Born: Sep 1915, Bromley 1
Married: 30 Oct 1935, Hungerford, George Seton Wills 2
The Times Thursday October 31, 1935 MARRIAGES Mr. G. S. Wills and Miss L. M. Hare The marriage took place yesterday, at St. Mary's, Chilton Foliat, of Mr. George Seton Wills, son of Sir Ernest and Lady Wills, of Littlecote, near Hungerford, Wiltshire, and Miss Lilah Mary Hare, daughter of Captain and Mrs. Percy Hare, of Villa mes Délices, Mentone, France. The Bishop of Bath and Wells officiated, assisted by Cannon A. L. Helps and the Rev. W. H. Pelham. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a white gown woven with silver, and her tulle veil was held in place by a halo headdress of orange-blossom. She carried a bouquet of Madonna lilies. Venetia Wills (niece of the bridegroom) was the trainbearer, and there were four other little bridesmaids - Jane and Susan Kyffin and Priscilla and Audrey Haag - and two grown-up attendants - Miss Victoria Hare (sister of the bride) and Miss Rosemary Potter. They all wore lavender-blue dresses, with head-wreaths and bouquets of dark red roses. Mr. E. E. de Winton Wills was best man to his brother. A reception was held afterwards at Littlecote, near Hungerford, and then the bride and bridegroom left to spend their honeymoon in South America. The bride traveled in a duck-egg blue dress, with a silver fox fur and dark blue hat. (The guests were too numerous to mention here.)

can not find her in the 1891 census or death She was in millinery and hatmaking Jan Wood reports 18.8.11 A mystery from the census: Both Charlotte Hinchcliffe nee Harris and Susanna Eddy Adams nee Harris had a nephew named Samuel R. Johnson who was born in Pimlico or Paddington, London in abt 1855, and who was deaf and dumb from early childhood. He seemed to live with Charlotte Hinchcliffe and her husband as a little boy and the Adams family when he got older, and became a bookbinder. As a middle aged man he lodged with his widowed cousin Mary Jane Carter nee Adams and her sons, but sadly in 1911 ended up as an inmate in Camberwell Union Workhouse. To be a nephew of both Harris women I assume he had to be a child of one of their sisters. The only two I can see as possibilities are Lydia and her older sister Elizabeth.

He was Mayor of Totnes in 1881, and a JP. I don't think he had any children. He left a will which (if a copy was bought) would reveal who his beneficiaries were.

Assume Mary Anne's sister from the 1881 census She is recorded as a widow, so must have marriage a Smerdon - but probably a census error There is a possibility in 1841 census as well - in June 1841 when the census was taken, there was a 20 year old milliner named Lydia HARRIS living in Tottenham Court Road, St. Pancras with a number of other young women and men at a childrens bed-linen warehouse run by Theodosia M. GETRICK She was a widow in the 1871 census 18.8.11 Jan Wood notes Lydia Smerdon Hamilton had 3 children and I have found the parish register marriage entries of all three scanned into Ancestry (part of the London Parish Records database). Her first child Helen was born in Liverpool; the other two were born in Brompton (Kensington). In 1871 she was recorded as a widow named Lydia S. Hamilton

She was a witness at William Smerdon & Mary Ann Harris marriage. lived in Newington/Lambeth area Child details from Jan Wood (18/8/11) They had 3 children - one son (John )probably died young but the other son (George) & daughter (Mary Ann) grew up to marry and have children in London - just found her as a widow yestrday, in the census, as she had another cousin lodging with her, and I had been tracing the cousin through the censuses.... have not traced the eventual fate of the son (George Adams) who survived childhood yet. she was in millinery and hatmaking Interesting detail from Jan Wood 19/8/11 both Charlotte Hinchcliffe nee Harris and Susanna Eddy Adams nee Harris had a nephew named Samuel R. Johnson who was born in Pimlico or Paddington, London in abt 1855, and who was deaf and dumb from early childhood.
