The Times Thursday, July 12, 1928 OBITUARY SIR GEORGE WILLS MUNIFICENT GIFTS TO BRISTOL Sir George Wills, Bt., president of the Imperial Tobacco Company and a munificent benefactor to Bristol, and especially Bristol University, died last night at his residence, Burwalls, Leigh Woods, at the age of 74. George Alfred Wills was the head of the eminent Bristol family which has received in quite recent times a peerage (Winterstoke) and four baronetcies. The eldest son of Mr. Henry Overton Wills, he was born on June 3, 1854, was educated at Mill Hill School, and joined in 1874 the family business of W. D. and H. O. Wills, tobacco manufacturers, of Bristol, of which he became managing director. When it was taken over with other firms in 1901 by the Imperial Tobacco Company of Great Britain and Ireland, which was formed for that purpose, he was made deputy-chairman. He succeeded his cousin, the late Lord Winterstoke, as chairman of the Imperial Tobacco Company in 1911, and retired in 1924. The company made great progress under his control, and in recognition of his services the directors invited him to accept the honorary title of president. He was also a director of the Great Western Railway. He was sheriff of Bristol in 1899-1900. Sir George Wills - he was created a baronet in 1923 - maintained the tradition of his family for munificent public benefactions. To the new Bristol University, of which his father was the first Chancellor and the practical founder, he presented two sums of £110,000 and £25,000 in 1924 and 1926 for the erection of a residential hall for men students on the property of Downside, adjoining Durdham Down. This was a memorial to his late brother, Mr. H. M. Wills who originally bought the Downside estate and presented it to the University. He was an active and able chairman of the council, and pro-Chancellor of the University, which made him Hon. LL.D.; he was also hon.. D.C.L. of Oxford. Sir George and his brother presented as a memorial to their father, at a cost of over £500,000, the new main building of the University, opened by the King in 1925, and he gave £25,000 to the Bristol Corporation for the enlargement of the Museum and Art Gallery. He gave £6,000 to Bristol Cathedral for new vestries and a choir practice room, and to the diocese of Bath and Wells - the Bishop is his son-in-law - he gave £5,000 and subsequently £20,000 for increasing clergy stipends. He presented Leigh Woods, on the banks of the Avon, to the National Trust, and he was president of the Bristol General Hospital, to which he made many gifts. In 1921 he was made a freeman of Bristol. At Blagdon, where he usually lived, he carried on the tradition of high farming, and was a successful breeder of Shorthorns. He was a keen angler and a good game shot. Members of the Wills family have left large fortunes. Sir George's father, Mr. H. O. Wills, who died 19 years ago, left £5,200,000, and his cousin, Mr. F. N. H. Wills, left £5,053,360 when he died last October. Nine other members of the family have each left £1,000,000 or more. todo censu 1891+ 1891 Census RG12-1953 3 April 1891 Long Ashton, Somerset Woodlands George A. They all wore lavender-blue dresses, with head-wreaths and bouquets of dark red roses. Mr. E. E. de Winton Wills was best man to his brother. A reception was held afterwards at Littlecote, near Hungerford, and then the bride and bridegroom left to spend their honeymoon in South America. The bride traveled in a duck-egg blue dress, with a silver fox fur and dark blue hat. (The guests were too numerous to mention here.)

Notes:
Married his wife's sister soon after the law was changed to allow it. George was born on 18 May 1911, the younger son of Sir Ernest Wills, 3rd Baronet of Hazelwood, and Caroline Fanny Maud de Winton. He served in WW2 as a Major in The Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry. He fought at El Alamein and was mentioned in dispatches. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration. George inherited Littlecote, upon the death of his father, but lived at Eastridge Manor on the Littlecote Estate. Littlecote House was opened to the public, and George gave it to his son on his 21st birthday, to avoid death duties. George, together with his son, purchased Inchrory (The Glenavon Estate) near Tomintoul, Banff shire in Scotland, which is next door to Balmoral Castle, using the sale proceeds of L'Oiseau Bleu, Menton, in France. He never inherited the Baronetcy, because he predeceased Sir Edward, his elder brother; Thus, the title went to his son, David Seton, as Sir Edward had no male heir. Ditchley Park, Enstone, Oxfordshire, the last major estate acquired by the Will family. It was donated in the 1950's by David Wills to the nation, and is now owned by the Ditchley Foundation, an Anglo-American educational trust which seeks to further transatlantic understanding through a programme of conferences and seminars. The Times, Friday, May 12, 1922 NEWS DEATH OF MR. H. H. WILLS A GREAT BENEFACTOR OF BRISTOL Mr. Henry Herbert Wills, one of Bristol's greatest benefactors, and a member of the well-known tobacco firm, died last night at his residence, St. Vincent's, Clifton Park. He was associated with many philanthropic institutions, and was perhaps most closely identified with Bristol University, which his father so materially assisted to bring into being, and which he fostered with a generousity equalled only by his brother, Mr. G. A. Wills. What he did for the University would be alone sufficient to place his name among the greatest of local philanthropists, but he recently launched a scheme which doubled the city's indebtedness to him, in founding St. Monica's Home of Rest for Incurables, to which he contributed one and a quarter millions. Mr. Wills was the second son of Mr. Henry Overton Wills, and was born in Bristol on March 20, 1856. He was educated at Clifton College and Bristol University College, in both of which he maintained a warm interest throughout his life. As a young man he devoted his attention to mechanical engineering, and the knowledge he gained was turned to profitable use when he entered the business of Messrs. W. D. and H. O. Wills. He became a director of the firm, and on the formation of the Imperial Tobacco Company he took a seat on the board. The Times, Monday, May 15, 1922 OBITUARY WILLS - On the 11th May, at St. Vincent's, Clifton Park, Bristol, HENRY HERBERT WILLS, late of Barley Wood, Wrington, Somerset, son of the late Henry Overton Wills, aged 66 years. Requiem All Saints, Clifton, 10.30 a.m. today (Monday). Funeral service Brisol Cathedral, 12 noon. Internment Canford Cemetery. No Flowers, by special request.

Notes:
The Times Tuesday, September 5, 1911 OBITUARY Mr. H. O. Wills The death occurred yesterday morning of Mr. Henry Overton Wills, of Kelston Knott, near Bath. He was the son of the late Henry Overton Wills, who with William Day Wills formed the original firm of W. D. and H. O. Wills, tobacco manufacturers, of Bristol and London. He was born at Bristol in 1828, entered the firm in 1846, and retired from active association with the business in 1880, owing to reasons of health. Since that time he lived largely in retirement, and for several years he had a summer residence in Norway. Mr. Wills was one of the oldest magistrates for Bristol, and was formerly on the directorate of several local commercial concerns. A generous supporter of local institutions in Bristol and Bath, he was especially interested in music and painting. He gave £2,000 in order to complete the Bristol Cathedral organ fund a few years ago, and made gifts of pictures to the Bristol Art Gallery, which his cousin, the late Lord Winterstoke, had presented to the city. At the time when his brother, the late Sir Edward Wills, and other Bristol citizens were promoting the foundation of a convalescent home as a memorial to Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Mr. Wills subscribed to £10,000. In 1908, his son, Mr. George Alfred Wills, deputy chairman of the Imperial Tobacco Company, was president of the Bristol University College Colston Society, founded to promote higher education and with the aim of building up a fund towards the endowment of a university for Bristol. At the annual dinner of the Society a letter was read from Mr. H. O. Wills promising £100,000 to the fund if a charter were obtained within two years. This gave great impetus to the movement. The late King Edward, on the occasion of his visit to Bristol in the same year, expressed interest in the proposal; other members of the Wills family gave large sums, and the citizens generally responded so generously that a charter was obtained well within the time and Mr. Wills was elected first Chancellor. It was a keen disappointment to him that the state of his health prevented him from doing much personal work for the University, but he followed it's proceedings with the deepest interest. Two years ago the honorary freedom of Bristol was conferred upon Mr. Wills and at the same time upon Mr. Joseph Storrs Fry. Mr. Wills took no part in the formation or conduct of the Imperial Tobacco Company, but three of his sons, Mr. George Alfred Wills, Mr. H. H. Wills, and Mr. W. Melville Wills, are directors. A fourth son, Mr. Stanley Wills, is a member of the Bar, and is attached to the Western Circuit. Mr H. O. Wills was of Nonconformist stock and was a Liberal until Mr. Gladstone's first Home Rule Bill, when he joined the Liberal Unionist Party. The Times, Friday, Sep 8, 1911 FUNERALS Mr. H. O. Wills The funeral took place in Bristol yesterday of Mr. Henry Overton Wills. Among the mourners were all the members of the family, including Sir Edward Wills, except the eldest son, Mr. George Wills, Chairman of the Imperial Tobacco Company, and his brother Mr. Stanley Wills, who were unable to return from Norway in time. There was a large congregation in the Cathedral including the Lord Mayor and members of the Corporation and the directors of the Imperial Tobacco Company. He was entombed in the same vault as his wife Alice, who died in December 1881, his son Maitland who was killed by a fall in North Wales in April 1885, his youngest son H.O. Wills IV who died in October 1899. todo: census+ 1871 RG10-2544 3 April 1871 Clifton, Gloucestershire Docareside Henry O. Wills Jr. 42 Tobacco & Snuff Mfgr. The bodice had long tight-fitting sleeves and the train was cut in one with the skirt.
