Married: Dec 1846, London, Thomas Smerdon 3

marriage register entry is in the London Banns and Marriages database.
Jan Wood has the 1841 census showing her in Ashburton with some of Thomas's cousins.
Thomas SMERDON remarried at the end of 1846 in London. His marriage was to an elderly spinster
named Sarah MUGFORD who had been born in either Exeter or Ashburton, Devon, sometime between
1779 and 1786. Thomas SMERDON, a 65 year old widower, clerk in Her Majesty's Customs of 41
Gloucester Terrace, Stepney, the son of Thomas SMERDON, merchant, was married to 60 year old
spinster Sarah MUGFORD, of Heavitree, near Exeter, Devon, at the parish church of St. Peter
upon Cornhill, London, on Christmas Eve 1846. The ceremony was performed by curate the Reverend
Thomas GROSE, and the witnesses to the marriage were W.GROVES and Elizabeth GROVES. Their
marriage was registered in the last quarter of 1846 in the City of London Registration District

    Notes:

    Jan Wood reports
She was born in either Exeter or Ashburton, Devon, sometime between 1779 and 1786.
Sarah MUGFORD was the daughter of James MUGFORD, a fuller and Freeman of the city of Exeter,
and grand-daughter of a woolcomber named John MUGFORD who had also been a Freeman. She had
a sister named Hannah who had been born in Exeter in about 1784, and baptised in the Bow (later
Mint) or St George's Independent Meeting, and who never married. Hannah MUGFORD lived
in Heavitree parish; in March 1851 when the census was taken, she was aged 67, and was living
there with an elderly lodger named Elizabeth MITCHELL. Sarah also had an older brother named
Philip MUGFORD, born in about 1776 in Exeter, who began life as an apprentice fuller and
who also became a Freeman of the City of Exeter, though later in life he became a publican
in Alphington Street, across the River Exe in Exeter St Thomas. It seems most likely that
Sarah had also been born in Exeter, though her baptism and that of her brother have not been
found. It is not clear how she could have met Thomas, though it could have been through her
family's membership of the Independent Chapel. Then again it could have been because the MUGFORDS
of Ashburton, who were publicans and local businessmen, were related to the Exeter MUGFORDS.
The MUGFORD sisters certainly knew Nathan BECK and may have been related to him; he
later acted as executor of Hannah's will.

I think that Sarah SMERDON died in Heavitree in 1862, as the death of a woman of that name was
registered in St. Thomas Registration District in the second quarter of that year. Her sister
Hannah MUGFORD died on 24 April 1862 at Heavitree and her death was registered in St. Thomas
Registration District in the same quarter of the same year. The will of Hannah MUGFORD was
proved on 15 September 1862 at Exeter by her executors Richard BULPIN of St. Thomas Exeter,
gentleman and Nathan BECK of Ashburton, gentleman. Her effects were valued at under £200.

    1841 census
Sarah MUGFORD, aged about 55 [rounded down to the nearest 5 years] and described as "independent",
appears to have been living in the same house in Ashburton with Thomas's cousin Sarah BECK
nee SMERDON, her husband Nathan BECK and their family.
    1861
widow Sarah Smerdon, aged 81 and described as a fundholder, was living back in Devon. She and
her spinster sister Hannah MUGFORD, aged 79, both described as born in Exeter, were living
with a visiting 81 year old nurse named Elizabeth MITCHEL, and a female servant, in 13 Sivell
Square, close to Fore Street, Heavitree, on the eastern edge of the City of Exeter

As a middle aged man, returned to Totnes, where he had a good business as a house decorator.
He was Mayor of Totnes in 1881, and a JP. I don't think he had any children. He left a will
which (if a copy was bought) would reveal who his beneficiaries were.

Child details from Jan Wood (18/8/11)
They had 3 children - one son (John )probably died young but the other son (George) & daughter
(Mary Ann) grew up to marry and have children in London - just found her as a widow yestrday,
in the census, as she had another cousin lodging with her, and I had been tracing the cousin
through the censuses.... have not traced the eventual fate of the son (George Adams) who survived
    childhood yet.
she was in millinery and hatmaking
Interesting detail from Jan Wood 19/8/11
both Charlotte Hinchcliffe nee Harris and Susanna Eddy Adams nee Harris had a nephew named Samuel
    R. Johnson who was born in Pimlico or Paddington, London in abt 1855, and who was deaf and
    dumb from early childhood.

18/8/11 I may have made an error as Jan Wood says there were at least 4 children.
Although it is possible there have been another child or two conceived/born in this gap, but
there is no evidence in Totnes baptism or burial registers of any other children

    Notes:

Assume Mary Anne's sister from the 1881 census
She is recorded as a widow, so must have marriage a Smerdon - but probably a census error
There is a possibility in 1841 census as well - in June 1841 when the census was taken, there
was a 20 year old milliner named Lydia HARRIS living in Tottenham Court Road, St. Pancras with
a number of other young women and men at a childrens bed-linen warehouse run by Theodosia
    M. GETRICK
She was a widow in the 1871 census
    18.8.11 Jan Wood notes
Lydia Smerdon Hamilton had 3 children and I have found the parish register marriage entries of
all three scanned into Ancestry (part of the London Parish Records database).
Her first child Helen was born in Liverpool; the other two were born in Brompton (Kensington).

In 1871 she was recorded as a widow named Lydia S. Hamilton

  • William Henry Pope, born 1825
  • John Pope, bapt. 1827
  • Thomas Smerdon Pope, born 1828
  • Father: Thomas Smerdon

    Mother: Anne Bennett Weekes

    Notes:

    Jan Wood records
I found that Mary Ann had a younger sister named Lydia Smerdon Harris, born in Totnes in Feb
1821, and baptised in 1823 together with the next baby born in the Harris family. She would
have been named after her mother's sister Lydia Smerdon, who married a miller named William
Pope and spent her life in Ashburton

Lydia POPE nee SMERDON was therefore left a widow at the age of 32, but she never remarried.
After her husband died, she and her son leased out Belford Mill, as a woollen mill and factory,
first to woollen cloth manufacturer Richard CARLILE, then to Thomas COUSINS, and after
that it was leased to Richard CAUNTER.

    1851
Lydia POPE was aged 54, and was living back at Belford Mills with her son William Henry POPE,
aged 25 and working as a miller, with the assistance of a live-in male servant. Nearby in
Belford Cottage lived her son John POPE with his wife, who was a descendant of the SMERDONS
of Elliots Hill, Buckland in the Moor, and their two young sons. The marriage between John
POPE and his wife Susannah Murch nee SMERDON linked together the SMERDONS of Ashburton and
the SMERDONS of Buckland in the Moor, and so their descendants could claim descent from the
    two separate SMERDON family lines.

She was buried in Ashburton churchyard in the graveplot next to her husband William, and his
    parents and brother.

    Notes:

can not find her in the 1891 census or death
She was in millinery and hatmaking
    Jan Wood reports 18.8.11
A mystery from the census: Both Charlotte Hinchcliffe nee Harris and Susanna Eddy Adams nee Harris
had a nephew named Samuel R. Johnson who was born in Pimlico or Paddington, London in abt
1855, and who was deaf and dumb from early childhood. He seemed to live with Charlotte Hinchcliffe
and her husband as a little boy and the Adams family when he got older, and became
a bookbinder. As a middle aged man he lodged with his widowed cousin Mary Jane Carter nee
Adams and her sons, but sadly in 1911 ended up as an inmate in Camberwell Union Workhouse.
To be a nephew of both Harris women I assume he had to be a child of one of their sisters.
The only two I can see as possibilities are Lydia and her older sister Elizabeth.
