    6. OBITUARY.

Nurse Margaret Stoney, of South Africa
      Associations with the Wigan District.

The death is announced in Pretoria of Nurse Margaret E. Stoney, Matron-in-Chief of the South
African Military Nursing Services and Principal Matron of Voortrokkerhoogte (Pretoria) Military
hospital. She was a Royal Red Cross Medalist and a Florence Nightingale Medalist, these
being the two highest honours that can be bestowed on nurses in South Africa.

Margaret Stoney was born it Tyldesley, and was also associated with Bolton and Edinburgh. But
Wigan can justly lay some claim to her for as a girl she knew and liked the old borough.
At one time she was district nurse at Orrell. At another she was on the staff of the Sanatorium
at Whelley. Ex-Wigan people gave her a welcome when she went to Lovedale, South Africa
in 1929. In the homes of other ex-Wiganers in Durban and Johannesburg she relaxed when off
duty. In the war years Wiganers in South Africa contacted one another for news of her.
There must be many ex-soldiers in Wigan and district who knew her in the hospitals which
she had charge of, and these can tell of her joy when they spoke "in the dialect" and when
      she found out their origin.

Nurse Stoney went out to South Africa in 1929 to be Matron of the Victoria hospital, Lovedale,
C.P., a large native hospital to which is attached a nursing probationers school. Here for
four years she rendered splendid service - giving lectures to student-nurses, supervising the
wards with their hundred or more native patients, while giving constant attention to the hospital's
growing pains with their attendant invasions of builders. In 1933 Nurse Stoney moved
on to be Matron of Entabeni Hospital, Durban, an institution on which she left her mark.
In Durban she also frequently lectured to probationers in other hospitals. Entabeni was
a happy yet well managed hospital in the years when she was in charge. But in 1939 the war
inexorably drew Durban and Entabeni and
      -2

and Margaret Stoney into its vortex. The campaigns in the Middle East and far East turned Durban
into a clearing house for thousands of wounded soldiers.
In 1940 Oribi Military Hospital planned, to accommodate 4,000 patients, was growing rapidly
yet not running smoothly. Medical men in Natal in those days had many problems to battle with,
many to do. One of the wise things they did was to place Margaret Stoney at the head of
Oribi, where she did a work worthy of Florence Nightinggale. The strain of Oribi was great,
yet she had no wish to leave when her friends in the medical profession decided that the hospital
ships serving between the Middle East and Durban had need of her. So for a time she served
on the ships. She left the hospital shpis to be Matron of Baragwanath Hospital, near Johannesburg.
Baragwanath was a war-time creation, an immense airport hospital. After the ending
of the war she was transferred to Voortrekkerhootge, the heatquarters of the South African
armed forces, where at the early age of 54 a recurrence of the illness which threatened her
life in the war years has carried her off.
"She was in many ways a remarkable woman", writes a South African correspondent. "Probably
no member of the nursing profession has ever been more respected that she was by the South
African medical profession. Though of humble birth she possessed in rich abundance the innate
qualities of the truly great. Having much to give she sought to serve, and South Africa
gave her both service and honour".

    Notes:

Barbara has a note she died in 1932 aged about 75 or 76
She could have a brother James, born 1866, who was 25 in 4 George St in 1891 with wife Alice
and daughter Maud E? aged 1
    Norman Stoney says...
With regard to Constance, Agnes and Margaret, after William died at the young age of 27 (in 1883)
Elizabeth took on a live in position as housekeeper for a Ralph Carr and his son. Elizabeth
took her sons with her but had to foster out the girls to relatives. Obviously the 'live
in' situaton took on a whole new meaning when between them they produced Constance and Agnes
who were both given the two surnames of Carr Stoney. Margaret was actually born a few months
after Ralph Carr died so presumably that is the reason why she didn't have the Carr Stoney
name. There is no record of them getting married.

Anecdotal information from "Great Uncle Alf" (Haslam) - our grandfather's brother

According to Uncle Alf there were 15 children in the family; Thomas was the eldest (& I think
Alf was the younget) but am not sure about the birth order of the others.

Alf said that "2 children died in infancy" - All this adds up to 14, so don't know about the
      15th.

He also mentioned "Sophia Parry" a maiden aunt and "Sam Parry" (poss an uncle or Sophia's father/brother).

He told me that Sophia wore "moleskin pockets under her skirt fill of golf sovereigns" to be
given to whoever looked after her in olf age. She died at age 96 sometime in the 1920's.
The Parrys were "of an Iron foundry family from Wales", which relates to the Uncle Alf's statement
that his grandfather (Sam Parry?) "was the first man to work at Bessomer's forge in Bolton"

Married: Jun 1889, Edmonton, London, Cecil Herbert Broadhurst 2

Julie Weir has Certificate of marriage for Cecil and it says he married Amina Patti Collins
    - they had a daughter Rita Amina M B, born Sept.qtr.1896 in Hendon reg. district. In the 1891
census Cecil and Amina have Harriet and John Benthin as his parents-in-law but on the certificate
it has her father as Thomas Collins with John Benthin as a witness, along with Florence
M Broadhurst. I think Harriet Benthin had been married to Thomas Collins before so John Benthin
was in fact a step father - very confusing. Then Cecil and Amina must have got divorced
because they both re-marry in 1902 - Amina marries a lodger who stayed with them in the 1901
census - Robert Grant. I can't find what happened to Rita.

    Children:
  • Rita Amina M Broadhurst, born 1896
