Cosmo Hamilton (29 April 1870 in Norwood, England 14 October 1942 in Guildford, England), born
Henry Charles Hamilton Gibbs, was an English playwright and novelist. He took his mother's
maiden name when he began to write. Hamilton was married twice: First to Beryl Faber, née Beryl
Crossley Smith, the sister of C. Aubrey Smith (Sir Charles Aubrey Smith, CBE (21 July 1863
20 December 1948), known to film-goers as C. Aubrey Smith, was an English cricketer and
actor.), who died in 1912, and then to Julia Bolton, the former wife of playwright Guy Bolton.
He was the brother of writers A. Hamilton Gibbs [Wikipedia entry is wrong] and Sir Philip
    Gibbs.
His London musicals include The Catch of the Season (1904), The Belle of Mayfair (1906), The
Beauty of Bath (1906). He then wrote a number of Broadway shows, and many screenplays.
Hamilton wrote dozens of novels, averaging a novel per year most of his adult life. His novels
    include:
His Majesty, the King: A Romantic Love Chase of the Seventeenth Century (1926) ISBN 978-0548024188

Who cares? a story of adolescence (1919) ISBN 978-1406925258
    The Rustle of Silk (1922)
Two kings and other romances (1917)
    Plain brown (1909)
A plea for the younger generation (1913)
The door that has no key (1913)
The Sins of the Children (1916)
During the First World War Hamilton was a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Air Service.

There are 27 portaits of him in the National Portrait gallery
Philip Gibbs, the fifth son of Henry James Gibbs, a civil servant at the Board of Education,
and Helen Hamilton, was born in London in 1877. Mainly educated at home by his parents, Gibbs
was determined to became a writer and at seventeen had his first article published by the
Daily Chronicle. Gibbs worked for the publishing house Cassell and his first book, Founders
of the Empire appeared in 1899.

In 1902 Alfred Harmsworth appointed Gibbs as literary editor of the Daily Mail. This was followed
by periods with the Daily Express and the Daily Chronicle. He also joined with J. L. Hammond,
Henry Brailsford and Leonard Hobhouse to produce a new Liberal newspaper called the Tribune.
The newspaper was not a success and Gibbs began writing novels. The Street of Adventure
(1909) described his early years as a journalist in London. His next book, Intellectual Mansions
(1910), dealt sympathetically with the Suffragette struggle for the vote.

In 1913 Gibbs went to Germany to report the growing tensions between the Triple Alliance and
the Triple Entente. His articles forecasting a peace agreement between the two groups proved
incorrect and in 1914 was sent to France to report the First World War. The War Office decided
to control the news that appeared in British newspapers. When Gibbs continued to report the
war he was arrested and returned to England.

In 1915 Gibbs was one of the five journalists selected by the government to become official war
correspondents with the British Army. Gibbs had to submit all his reports to the censor, C.
    E. Montague, the former leader writer with the Manchester Guardian.

As well as writing articles about the war for the Daily Chronicle and the Daily Telegraph, Gibbs
wrote several books on the conflict: The Soul of the War (1915), The Battle of the Somme
(1917), From Bapaume to Passchendaele (1918) and The Realities of War (1920). Like the other
four official British journalists in the war, Gibbs was awarded a knighthood in 1920.

In 1919 Gibbs undertook a very successful lecture tour of the United States. Later that year,
Gibbs became the first journalist ever to obtain an interview with the Pope. Gibbs was a Roman
Catholic and in 1920 resigned from the Daily Chronicle in protest at the newspaper's support
of David Lloyd George's policy of reprisals in Ireland.

Over the next fifteen years Gibbs worked as a freelance journalist. He also published several
books on European politics including Since Then (1930), European Journey (1934), England Speaks
(1935), Ordeal in England (1937) and Across the Frontiers (1938).

On the outbreak of the Second World War he worked briefly as a foreign reporter for the Daily
Sketch. Later he was invited to work for the Ministry of Information in the United States.
After the war failing eyesight prevented Gibbs from continuing his work as a journalist.

Gibbs first book of reminiscences, Adventures in Journalism, appeared in 1923. In his later years,
he published three more volumes of autobiography: The Pageant of the Years (1946), Crowded
Company (1949) and Life's Adventure (1957). Philip Gibbs died in Godalming on 10th March,
    1962.

    Notes:

can not find him in the 1981 census
Samuel was baptised at the age of 8 or 9 months old as "Samuel Richard Harris Johnson" - his
middle names being his grandfather Harris's name. He was probably born in Pimlico, as that
is where his mother died, but his father lived in Paddington, so there was confusion in Samuel's
mind about where he was born, I think.
It is quite sad to think that Samuel, being deaf and dumb, could not hear any music - this must
have been a disappointment to his father, he being a musical instrument maker by trade.
Even when he grew up he seems to have lived with his maternal relatives, not his father (as
    he died in 1862).

Buried: 3 May 1838, Ashburton Parish Church, Devon

Married: 17 Aug 1824, Ashburton Parish Church, Devon, Lydia Smerdon 1

    Children:
  • William Henry Pope, born 1825
  • John Pope, bapt. 1827
  • Thomas Smerdon Pope, born 1828
  • Father: William Pope

    Mother: Margaret Kingwell

    Notes:

    Jan Wood (1/9/11)
In this Will, William POPE Senior had appointed Robert ABRAHAM (an Ashburton attorney-at-law
and gent.) as trustee, to ensure that his oldest daughter Mary received £300, and interest,
out of the rentals from Belford Mill, and that his older son William POPE Junior inherited
    the freehold Mill itself.

He was buried in the same grave as his parents and his brother John, and the inscription referring
to his death reads as follows:
Also the remains of William POPE who died 1st May 1828 aged 38 years

The abstract to the title of Belford Mill states that William POPE, miller died INTESTATE (that
is without having made a will) 'on or about the --- day of -----1829' (it was actually the
previous year) having made no appointment under the power given him by his father's Will, and
thus leaving William Henry POPE, his eldest son, as his heir at law.
The early death of William POPE and his neglect in making a Will, meant that he made no provision
for his two younger children, and thus only his eldest son William Henry POPE had any inheritance
    - and he got the whole property, as stipulated in his grandfather's Will

The POPE family had originally come from Sandford, near Crediton. Lydia's father-in-law William
POPE Senior had come with his father and mother from Sandford to Ashburton as a boy or
a young man. William POPE Senior was a miller, and purchased Belford Mills in Ashburton parish
in September 1810. An abstract of the title of his grandson William Henry POPE to the
freehold title of Belford Mill (otherwise known as Higher Lurgecombe Mill), which is now held
in Devon Record Office, indicates that William POPE Senior had purchased the mill from Sir
John Lethbridge of Somerset, the great-nephew and heir at law of the deceased owner, John
Periam Esquire, for £450. The mill property, which comprised land, mill and dwelling houses,
was bounded on the west by the road leading from the town of Ashburton towards Halshanger
and Ilsington parish, on the east by the River Yeo, on the north by the lands of John Rowe
BENNETT Esquire, and on the south by the lands of woollen cloth manufacturers John and Richard
BERRY, which were eventually bought by John F[abyan] AMERY Esquire, another resident of
Ashburton parish who attended the Independent Chapel. The mill, which was originally a water
grist mill, stood on land measuring 1acre, 1 rood and 29 perches or thereabouts.
Note that a man named Andrew BENNETT had witnessed the wedding of William POPE Junior's aunt,
Ann POPE, to Richard SMERDON [one of the Buckland in the Moor SMERDONS] in Ashburton in 1784.
