    	LEYLAND, Frederick Richards: Find-a-Grave Memorial
    	LEYLAND, Frederick Richards (1831-1892)
Leyland's funerary monument is the only such work by Edward Burne-Jones - the finest Arts and
Crafts funerary monument in the UK, and Grade II listed.
    Age 60 years
    Notes
Frederick Leyland started working as an apprentice for John Bibby, Sons & Co and became a partner
of that firm. As early as 1864-1867 he commissioned paintings from G.D. Rossetti and J.M.
Whistler. In 1867, he took the tenancy of Speke Hall, Liverpool (see photo) and in 1869 he
bought a house in London at 49, Princes Gate. In 1873 he founded the Leyland Shipping Line.

From Edward Burne-Jones, Leyland commissioned "The Beguiling of Merlin". The painting was executed
between 1872 and 1877. During the 1870s Whistler decorated Leylandþs dining room, the Peacock
Room. His relationship with Whistler turned sour in 1877 after he refused to pay a bill
of 2,000 guineas because he was of the opinion that Whistler had exceeded a commission when
he painted the Peacock Room. Whistler went bankrupt the next year and took revenge with caricatures
    of Leyland.

Leyland separated from his wife, Frances Dawson in 1879 and went on to have 2 illegitimate sons
with Annie Ellen Wooster. They were; Fred Richards Wooster (1884) and Francis George Wooster
(1890). After their separation, Frances sold The Peacock Room to Charles Lang Freer. It was
dismantled and shipped to Washington and is now at the Freer Gallery of Art there.

Leyland's daughter Florence Leyland (1959-1921) married the painter Valentine Prinsep.

When Leyland died in January 1892, he was among the largest ship-owners in Great/Britain. His
funerary monument at Brompton Cemetery in London was created by Edward Burne-Jones.

Francis George Leyland Wooster was the second of two illegitimate sons of Sir Frederick Richards
Leyland and Annie Ellen Wooster. He was born on 13 January 1890 in Broadstairs, Kent.
The following extracts are taken from a book by Alan Pryce-Jones entitled, The Bonus of Laughter.
Published in 1987, it provides an invaluable insight into the life and character of Frank
    Wooster.
    The Early Years
    Chapter 9, page 99, para 3 starts...
"Then came the First World War. At that time, Frank Wooster[1] was a young man in his early twenties.
He had come into the world, along with a brother[2], when Leyland, the shipping magnate
who commissioned from Whistler, the 'Peacock Room', left his yacht in Ramsgate, went for
a walk on the shore and met the beautiful Mrs Wooster[3]. He stayed with Mrs Wooster for two
decades or more, refused a divorce by his legal wife[4], and settling substantial sums on his
    illegitimate children."
"The legend continued: Many years later he set off to visit his London lawyer and change his
will in favour of the Woosters, and he died in the train. An embattled Mrs Leyland[4] sped
down to evict her rival, and in a very short time Frank[1] lost the £100,000 settled on him
in a few days gambling in Monte Carlo. He joined the Army, and then in France met my father-in-law[5]
with whom he struck up a close friendship. He was captured by the Germans, and on
release moved to Paris where he spent the rest of his life, never learning French, living as
an amiable adventurer, either selling dubious antiques, in partnership for a time with Sir
Robert Abdy, or carried along by admirers, both women and men, who happened to be elegant,
    notable, and rich."
"For he was, as I have said, a man of exceptional good looks. Even in middle-age his appearance
made strangers turn their heads in the street. A severe critic might call his looks a trifle
Hollywood: the wavy hair eventually blue-rinsed, the straight, trim nose too defiantly triangular.
His Charvet tussore shirts were too carefully ironed, the embroidered FW's on his pyjamas
a shade fanciful, perhaps. And, to match this stellar presentation, he was often extremely
silly, not least after a few cocktails. But he wished to please, and he pleased. He was kind.
He was often funny. He was an excellent friend. And his positive qualities seem to have
    won my father-in-law's[5] heart."
