Census: 1871, North Street, Ashburton, Devonshire 5

Married: 17 Aug 1824, Ashburton Parish Church, Devon, William Pope 6

Children:
  • William Henry Pope, born 1825
  • John Pope, bapt. 1827
  • Thomas Smerdon Pope, born 1828
  • Father: Thomas Smerdon

    Mother: Anne Bennett Weekes

    Notes:

    Jan Wood records
I found that Mary Ann had a younger sister named Lydia Smerdon Harris, born in Totnes in Feb
1821, and baptised in 1823 together with the next baby born in the Harris family. She would
have been named after her mother's sister Lydia Smerdon, who married a miller named William
Pope and spent her life in Ashburton

Lydia POPE nee SMERDON was therefore left a widow at the age of 32, but she never remarried.
After her husband died, she and her son leased out Belford Mill, as a woollen mill and factory,
first to woollen cloth manufacturer Richard CARLILE, then to Thomas COUSINS, and after
that it was leased to Richard CAUNTER.

    1851
Lydia POPE was aged 54, and was living back at Belford Mills with her son William Henry POPE,
aged 25 and working as a miller, with the assistance of a live-in male servant. Nearby in
Belford Cottage lived her son John POPE with his wife, who was a descendant of the SMERDONS
of Elliots Hill, Buckland in the Moor, and their two young sons. The marriage between John
POPE and his wife Susannah Murch nee SMERDON linked together the SMERDONS of Ashburton and
the SMERDONS of Buckland in the Moor, and so their descendants could claim descent from the
    two separate SMERDON family lines.

She was buried in Ashburton churchyard in the graveplot next to her husband William, and his
    parents and brother.
