Later one of the Easterbrook nieces who had worked in this beerhouse married her Pope first cousin, thus ensuring that the inbreeding continued! This is the couple in the 1881 census - John Smerdon Pope Junior and Mary Jane nee Easterbrook. They had eight children, but four of those died as babies or children. Six of their children carried the middle name Smerdon. death? James (brother), George, James & Sarah Priscilla Easertbrooks. Things improved for these families once they got out of the East End after WW 2.
