This show was held in part of Sparkwell farm then owned by "Topline" Broadhurst, who was also show secretary at the time. This field was on the Landscove to Staverton road opposite the old cider works, then run by Whiteways. I remember that I went in to see if they needed any help and was given the job of putting the prize-winning labels on after the judges had done their job. That particular show was held on a lovely summer's day and seemed to us a very enjoyable event, something we could look forward to taking part in over the coming years. In the early days as I remember the show was always held at the Landscove end of the parish, I guess this was because the farming fraternity were most involved and they mostly lived up at that end. The show moved around a bit in whatever field was available I guess, after a while it settled down and was held in the field just past the Live and Let Live going towards Staverton. This was certainly a very nice spot with views towards Dartmoor, but it was far from level, there was a nice level spot where the marquee was pitched but where the sports were held was far from level.

Father: John Trevor Kyffin
Mother: Margaret Joyce de Winton Wills
Notes:
After she divorced Topline in 1950 (?), she married Michael Baille-Grohman and lived in Wiltshire and then Tilehurst, Reading for a short while. In 1954 (?) they travelled overland in a Hilliam Husky van to India where she shot a record length tiger. They then lived in Schloss Matzen, Brizlegg, Innsbruch, Austria, which was his father's (Admiral B-G) castle. On her return to England and her divorce in 1958 she moved into Freshfield Manor, Horsted Kynes, Sussex. In the early 1960s she moved to Keeper's Cottage, Coleman's Hatch, Sussex before buying 88 Ebury Street, London. She changed her name by deed poll to Victoria Gordon (hence her number plate VG 88). on 3 Feb 1960. She married Percy G.H. Fender (b. 22 Aug 1892, d. 15 Jun 1985) on 19th Apr 1962 at Crowborough. Note he had served with Gogo in WWI. They brought Cox Farm, Warnham, Horsham, but kept on both their London flats. She had separated from PGH Fender by the time of her death. A very good biography of her is given in Shon's (Williams Kyffin) book 'A Wider Sky' 1991, ISBN 086383-757-3. He changed the names as follows: Gwen was Mummy, Owen was Gogo, Brenda was Granny, David was Thomas, TB Lieutenant was Dad, Berkshire village was Tilehurst and the Commander was Michael. Schloss Wolfstein was Matzen. According to Kump, the present owner of Matzen... "In 1873 Fanny Read Grohman, an Irishwoman, bought the property and restored it. Her son William Baillie-Grohman continued her work, wrote a number of books about the history of the valley, and once even hosted Theodore Roosevelt on a hunt. The family maintained the castle through two World Wars, returning to Britain when the fighting got too close. The fourth generation of the family sold the castle in 1957" Web article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourne_House,_East_Woodhay From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Coordinates: 51.3675°N 1.3747°W Bourne House, East Woodhay, lies at the northwestern tip of the parish of Widehaye in the Evingar hundred, in Hampshire, England. History With an estate of 30 acres (120,000 m2) that encompassed five cottages, it was nevertheless described as Bourne cottage when it was sold to divine and writer Philip Antoine de Teissier (18191891) in 1872. A notice advertising an impending sale by auction was printed in The Times of 1 March 1853, stating: ...a very valuable FREEHOLD ESTATE: comprising a compact gentlemans residence, called BOURNE COTTAGE, with excellent yard, garden, barn, stable, and orchard. bounded on the north by a beautiful stream*, . . . situate in a most desirable and highly respectable neighborhood, and together forms a very pretty estate. . . . The scenery around is very extensive and picturesque.[1] Owners The Barons de Teissier The Rev. Philip Antoine de Teissier was the third son of James (first Baron) de Teissier (17941868), of Woodcote Park, Epsom, Surrey, who was appointed a Baron of France by Louis XVIII on 4 December 1819 'in consideration for the kindness shown by his father [Lewis, a merchant of London][citation needed] during the French Revolution to French subjects, and in acknowledgement of the loyalty of the head of the family Jean Antoine (de Teissier) 3rd Baron of Marquerittas who was guillotined 20 May 1794'. The De Teissiers owned the house from 1872 to 1910. After Corpus Christi College, Oxford (matric. 1837), Philip de Teissier held around a dozen curacies between 1842 and 1871.[citation needed] He wrote five books. including Voices of the Dead (London, 1875) and Sermons upon the Lords Supper (London, 1878). In 1891 Philip de Teissier, (by then third Baron de Teissier) died unmarried and childless at the Westminster Palace Hotel, London, leaving effects valued at £57,170. The house passed to his brother, General (Henry) Price (fourth Baron) de Teissier (18201895), described as "of Fetcham-grove, Leatherhead", and then of both of "Fetcham-grove and Bourne-house".[2][citation needed] General Baron de Teissier owned the house for four years before he died and it was passed to his son, Henry (fifth) Baron de Teissier (1862-25 June 1931), who sold Bourne House in 1910. He died at age 30 at The Avenue, Upper Norwood, Surrey, leaving effects valued at £1,535 15s 3d to his wife, Agneta Mary, Baroness de Teissier. Ernest Wills Sir Ernest Wills (18691958), third baronet, of the Bristol tobacco firm W. D. & H. O. Wills, had the house for three and a half years, 19201923, after the First World War just before and after he inherited his baronetcy and another house on the death of his brother in October 1921. Up to 1920 he had lived at Ramsbury Manor, Wiltshire. He died in 1958, assets valued at £766,556. In 1920 he already had Meggernie Castle, Glenlyon, Perthshire, Scotland, and went on to possess the 8,000-acre (32 km2) Littlecote estate near Hungerford (leased from 1922, freehold from 1929). A director of Imperial Tobacco, he was the last of his family to be directly involved in the business. Last known birth in the house On 19 November 1921 Margaret Joyce de Winton Wills (1898-1976), daughter of Ernest Wills, wife of Captain John Trevor Kyffin (1894-1969), gave birth at Bourne House to a daughter, named Susan.[3] Susan, aka Victoria Gordon of 88 Ebury Street, Belgravia, appears, as Gwen or Brenda, in Sir John "Kyffin" Williams' memoir A Wider Sky, 1991, and married thrice: (1) (Kingswear, Devon, 15.12.1943) Lt. Creighton 'Topline' Cecil Percy Broadhurst, RNVR. (9.10.1919-), the Westward Television gardening correspondent, renowned Torquay rose garden owner and author of Sound Gardening, Plymouth Sound, 1980,[4] they divorced circa 1950 having had three children; (2) (St Columba's, Cadogan Sq, London, 4.4.1952) Michael Arthur Baillie-Grohmam, (d.1978), DSC, of Schloss Matzen (sold 1957), Brizlegg, Austria, a grandson of William Adolf Baillie Grohman, divorce 1958; and (3) (Crowborough, 19.4.1962) the legendary cricketer Percy Fender (1892-1985), from whom she had separated at the time of her early death on 25.11.1966, aged 45.[5] John William Douglas John William Douglas had the house for five years from 1923 to 1928.[according to whom?][6] Arthur Southwell Irish Peer, Sir Arthur Southwell, seventh baronet, the fifth Viscount Southwell (18721944). and his family had it for 17 years from 1929 to 1946.[7] Southwell was in the Royal Monmouthshire Engineers Militia and the Shropshire Yeomanry and was a lieutenant-colonel in the Machine Gun Corps.[8][9] During World War II Southwell led the local Air Raid Precautions unit, the dining-room at Bourne house therefore being used as the control room. He married Dorothy Walrond in 1897. She was the daughter of the first Lord Waleran. Dorothy, who died in 1952, created a Japanese garden, some plants and the rockery, which were extant when the house when on sale in 2006. The 1946 sale particulars described the house as a : ...Particularly Attractive Country ResidenceLounge hall, three reception rooms, Ten bedrooms, Four Bathrooms, Domestic Offices,... Main Electric Light, Telephone... The Residence is of moderate size, fitted with modern conveniences and easily run ... Two loose Boxes, Harness Room with loft over, Cowhouse for two Cows, Four dog kennels, Mens E.C., Potting Shed, Apple Store, four cottages, 31 acres, good water supply (main available) ... William Page, vol. 4, Constable, London, 1911, p. 39. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Matzen The first mention of the castle in Medieval times is in 1167 in the Salzsburg domesday in which "Ulricus de Vriunsperch von der Matzen" and his wife ELsbeth von Walchen renounce their rights to a property called Waidring (near Kitzbuhl) in favour of the Archbishop of Salzburg - indicating that it was by this time in the possession of the Knights of Frundsberg, a powerful family one of whom George von Frundsberg founded the Landsknechte, modern Europe's first standing infantry army. The Frundberg ancestral home was at Schwaz, some 11 miles distant. At this time a large part of the lower Inn valley was in the fief of the See of Brixen. A copy of an older medieval document in the chapel indicates that the original chapel was consecrated in 23 November 1176 by Archbishop Conrad of Wittelsbach, a member of the royal house of Bavaria A deed of 1263 records a visit by Meinhard of Tyrol, the then sovereign, to Matzen (Acta sunt nec (sic) Burgo Matcii) in which a Rupert von Matzen is one of the witnesses for an act confirming gifts to the monastery of St Benedict in Bavaria. A document by Martin Bitschnau in 1282 in the Fiecht/St. Georgenberg archives mentions "Grifo, miles de Matzen". Grifo von Sonnenburg was a knight in the service of the Lord of Frundsberg at Schwaz. In the summer 1410 the castle under the command of Ulrich von Frundsberg was besieged by the forces of Duke Freidrich of Bavaria. Remnants of the siege, including stone balls were found during excavations of the garden entrance in 1900 Two major Romanesque building periods can be discerned in the castles construction, followed by Gothic additions in the 15th century and modifications as a residence in the 16th century. Much of the upper castle had to be rebuilt in the 19th century. Situated on a rock outcrop on the side of the valley to escape floods from the inn river, the castle is built directly on the living rock. with dungeons and storage rooms carved out from the bedrock. The main edifice comprises a massive central block on Romanesque foundations round a deep four-storey central arcaded courtyard, the elongated north and south wings being linked by a short west wing. The arcades have groined Gothic vaults and octagonal marble columns dating from the first half of the 16th century. A series of wooden galleries criss-cross the sides of the central area opening up the circulation. These were added by Fanny von Carolsveld, who also added the balconied oriel enclosures on the south and west sides which offer spectacular views down the valley. The sheer walls of the central block rise without fenestration for four or five stories from the rock outcrop offering an effective defense. Originally a steep covered passageway led up from the valley floor to the courtyard, where part of the lower "Gut Matzen" block now stands. On the eastern end of the upper block is linked to a six-story keep tower of ancient origin, notable for its round shape, unusual for the region. An upper ring wall with 19th-century machicolations forms the eastern boundary, with a door opening onto an upper drive; previously this was protected by a moat, later was filled in as part of the late 19th-century restoration works and made into a garden.

I had thoughts 13 Jan 2002 that Christening on 18 Jan 1836 at Saint Mary-St. Marylebone Road, St. Marylebone, London, England IGI Batch #: C035248, Sheet #: , Source Call #: 0580912, 0580913, 0580914 Father: John MACKand Wife: Catherine LYNCH might be the right one but not John ARTHUR JOSEPH He was described as a retired Bank Manager at John Arthur's 1898 marriage (2012 - do not follow this!) The story was later related [4] that John Mack, John Arthur Joseph Mack, was a young bank cashier in The City of London and he would call at Smerdons tobacconist shop on his way to or from work. Eventually he would fall in love with Susan as she worked in her fathers shop. One can certainly picture the dashing banker chatting up the shopkeepers pretty young daughter; she was eight years his junior. Susan Smerdon and John Arthur Joseph Mack were married on 19 September 1864 at The Parish Church in Hackney, and both fathers, John Mack and William Smerdon, were declared as gentlemen on the certificate of marriage, very much an upper class title. Present at the wedding were William and Mary Ann Smerdon, as well as Emma Smerdon and Eliza Warburg. Susan and John were to have seven children, Arthur William born in 1866, Roselle Bertha born in 1867, Cecilia Louise born in 1869 [5], Edward Percy born in 1871, Alice Claire also born in 1871, Wilmott Smerdon born on 17 June 1875 and Cecil born in 1877. They were wealthy enough to employ domestic servants, a cook and a housemaid. Alan Mack said Aug 2015 John Arthur Joseph MACK was admitted into the Freedom, Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths 17th day of Apr/May 1888 this in the 51st year of the reign of Queen Victoria. He was a Prime Warden in 1910 and a bank Manager of a National Provincial Bank. Could possibly have been Trafalgar Square, will have to check, bur confirmed by archivist at Nat West Bank, who had still have his service and retirement details. I must research as much as I can on JAJ. Presumably born John, heard born St. Johns Wood, where was he from birth to the age of 29 a boarder with Barnard and then married? I believe he joined a bank that went under and then went to Nat Prov. as a bank clerk. Gathered a few more names around him on his way up, hence John Arthur Joseph.

Notes:
He died in suspicious circumstances after falling off the 80-foot cliff at Ovingdean near Brighton on 13th June 1939; a brown trilby was lying on the ground nearby. Nobody could explain why Norman was in Brighton because he lived in Bayswater, London W.2., and had returned on leave, three months earlier, from British Guiana in The West Indies where he was a Sugar Plantation Overseer. One fact emerged from the ensuing investigation. His manservant, Rupert Taylor, said that he had a regular caller called Miss Betty Davies and he occasionally stayed away at The Hindhead Hotel at Bray on Thames
