The Times, Monday, May 15, 1865 D. Wills, J.P. for Bristol Fatal Accident, - Mr. W. D. Wills, J.P. for Bristol, late deputy-chairman of the Bristol and Exeter Railway Company, and head of the well-known firm of W.D. and H.O. Wills and Sons, tobacco manufacturers, of Bristol, died on Saturday at St Bartholomew's Hospital, from the effects of an accident he met with on the previous Thursday evening. Mr. Wills was in London attending the May meetings of various religious societies, in which he took an interest, and on Thursday evening was crossing at the foot of Snow-hill when he was knocked down by an omnibus. The driver called out, but Mr. Wills did not hear him, and the horses could not be stopped before the forewheel had passed over both his legs below the knee, inflicting compound fractures on each. His left leg was most severely crushed, in addition, by the pressure of the drag, which was on the hind wheel. Mr. Wills requested to be removed to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and on his arrival at that institution Mr Holmes Coote found it necessary immediately to amputate his left leg below the knee. The deceased gentleman bore the operation very well, and hopes were entertained of his recovery. He, however, gradually sank, and, as already stated, died in the course of Saturday. Mr. Wills was much esteemed by all classes of his fellow citizens. The Times, Tuesday, May 16, 1865 DEATHS On the 13th inst, at Bartholomew's Hospital, from the effects of a sever accident, W. D. Notes:
Living with them in 1881 were their nieces Janet S.G. Stancomb and Yda E.M. Stancomb aged 27 and 25 William was created a baronet in 1892. He was the key player in the forming of The Imperial Tobacco Company in 1901, and became it's chairman, a position he held until his death in 1911. Sir William was elevated to Baron Winterstoke of Blagdon in 1906, and was then referred to as Lord Winterstoke. The Times Monday, January 30, 1911 OBITUARY Lord Winterstoke We regret to announce that Lord Winterstoke (Sir William Henry Wills) died suddenly at his residence, Blagdon Lodge, near Bristol, early yesterday morning in his 81st year. He appeared to have been in his usual health lately, and only on Saturday he was out on his estate and had a parade of horses entered for forthcoming shows. When he retired there was nothing unusual in his appearance, but at about 3 o'clock yesterday morning he summoned his niece, Miss Stancombe Wills, whom he informed that his breathing, which had troubled him of late, was very difficult. A doctor was sent for and arrived at 5 o'clock. Although everything was done to relieve the patient he died shortly afterwards from heart failure. Lord Winterstoke was the only son of Mr. William Day Wills, one of the founders of the tobacco firm of Messrs. W. D. and H. O. Wills, and was born in September, 1830. After being educated at Mill Hill School and the London University he gave up his intention of going to the Bar and joined his father in the great tobacco business at Bristol. He took an active part in local affairs and was made a Justice of the Peace so long ago as 1866, and was therefore one of the senior members of the Bench. He became a prominent member of the local Liberal Party and was president of the Anchor Society in 1864. In 1880 he was elected to Parliament for Coventry, which he represented until 1885, when that borough lost one of it's members. From 1894 to 1900 he sat for South Bristol. He served as Sheriff of Bristol and was appointed Deputy-Lieutenant of Somerset. He was created a baronet in 1892 and raised to the peerage in 1905. Sir William Henry Wills, as he was then, was chief mover in the formation of the Imperial Tobacco Company, the head offices of which are at Bristol, and he retained the position of chairman to the time of his death. The company was formed in 1901 to acquire the business of 13 tobacco manufacturing concerns in the United Kingdom, and the magnitude of the operation is shown by the fact that the total consideration for the purchase was £11,957,000. In the following year other businesses were acquired, and the "combine," as it was known in the trade, acquired a large interest in two important companies. For many years, too, Lord Winterstoke had been a director of the Great Western Railway Company and also of the Bristol Waterworks Company and the Phoenix Assurance Company. He was one of the founders of the London Missionary Society and the British and Foreign Bible Society. He spent most of his time at Blagdon, where he bred Shire horses and Shorthorn stock, which have taken many prizes at the leading shows. Lord Winterstoke has made munificent gifts to Bristol, including it's art gallery, and contributed £35,000 to the Formation Fund of the local university, of which he was pro-Chancellor. He gave liberally to religious, educational, and charitable institutions, not only at Bristol, but also in London and elsewhere. His last gift, announced a few days ago, was £5,000 to the scheme for enlarging Bristol General Hospital. He presented the city with a statue of Edmund Burke, which was unveiled by Lord Rosebery. He presented valuable organs to the Colston Hall and to Bristol Grammer School, Mansfield College, Oxford, and Mill Hill School, to the centenary fund of which he gave £10,000. He married in 1853 Elizabeth, daughter of John Stancombe, of Trowbridge, who died in 1896, and leaves no heir. The Times Saturday, Febuary 18, 1911 LORD WINTERSTOKE'S ESTATE The will with five codicils of Lord WInterstoke of Blagden, who died on January 29, has been carried in for probate at the Principal Registry by the executors, Mr. George Alfred Wills, and Mr. Frank William Wills, his cousins, and Mr. William John Mann and Mr. WIlliam Rennie, the estate being provisionally sworn at £1,000,000, so far as at present can be ascertained. Lord Winterstoke entailed his Coombe Lodge estate at Blagdon and all other his Somersetshire estates on Mr. George Alfred Wills, and devised East Court, St. Lawrence-on-Sea, to Miss Stancomb Wills for life, and then to Mr. G. A. Wills as part of the entail. His London residence in Hyde Park Gardens and his yacht Sabrina he bequeathed to Miss Wills for life. After specifically bequeathing his furniture and effects, and giving various annuities and legacies to relatives, friends, dependants, and servants, he left his residuary estate on trust, the income of one-half to be paid to Miss Stancomb WIlls for life and of the other half to Mrs. Richardson for life (his adopted daughters); and subject thereto his residuary estate is divided - as to two fourth parts between Messrs. Arthur John Grahame Stancomb and Frederick William Stancomb and their sister Mrs. Burton; as to another fourth part to Mr. Frank William Wills; and as to the remaining fourth part to Messrs. Henry Wills Gunn and Ernest Henry Mayo Gunn equally. One of the codicils confirms a donation of £25,000 to Bristol University in addition to a previous gift of £10,000, both of which sums were paid in Lord Winterstoke's lifetime; and another codicil directs his executors to discharge any claim for estate duty in respect of gifts made within three years of his death at the cost of his personal estate, rather than allow the recipiants to be called upon to pay such duty. 1871 Census RG10-2545 3 April 1871 Clifton, Bristol, Gloucestershire Hawthornden House William H. Notes:
The Times Tuesday, September 5, 1911 OBITUARY Mr. H. O. Wills The death occurred yesterday morning of Mr. Henry Overton Wills, of Kelston Knott, near Bath. He was the son of the late Henry Overton Wills, who with William Day Wills formed the original firm of W. D. and H. O. Wills, tobacco manufacturers, of Bristol and London. He was born at Bristol in 1828, entered the firm in 1846, and retired from active association with the business in 1880, owing to reasons of health. Since that time he lived largely in retirement, and for several years he had a summer residence in Norway. Mr. Wills was one of the oldest magistrates for Bristol, and was formerly on the directorate of several local commercial concerns. A generous supporter of local institutions in Bristol and Bath, he was especially interested in music and painting. He gave £2,000 in order to complete the Bristol Cathedral organ fund a few years ago, and made gifts of pictures to the Bristol Art Gallery, which his cousin, the late Lord Winterstoke, had presented to the city. At the time when his brother, the late Sir Edward Wills, and other Bristol citizens were promoting the foundation of a convalescent home as a memorial to Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Mr. Wills subscribed to £10,000. In 1908, his son, Mr. George Alfred Wills, deputy chairman of the Imperial Tobacco Company, was president of the Bristol University College Colston Society, founded to promote higher education and with the aim of building up a fund towards the endowment of a university for Bristol. At the annual dinner of the Society a letter was read from Mr. H. O. Wills promising £100,000 to the fund if a charter were obtained within two years. This gave great impetus to the movement. The late King Edward, on the occasion of his visit to Bristol in the same year, expressed interest in the proposal; other members of the Wills family gave large sums, and the citizens generally responded so generously that a charter was obtained well within the time and Mr. Wills was elected first Chancellor. It was a keen disappointment to him that the state of his health prevented him from doing much personal work for the University, but he followed it's proceedings with the deepest interest. Two years ago the honorary freedom of Bristol was conferred upon Mr. Wills and at the same time upon Mr. Joseph Storrs Fry. Mr. Wills took no part in the formation or conduct of the Imperial Tobacco Company, but three of his sons, Mr. George Alfred Wills, Mr. H. H. Wills, and Mr. W. Melville Wills, are directors. A fourth son, Mr. Stanley Wills, is a member of the Bar, and is attached to the Western Circuit. Mr H. O. Wills was of Nonconformist stock and was a Liberal until Mr. Gladstone's first Home Rule Bill, when he joined the Liberal Unionist Party. The Times, Friday, Sep 8, 1911 FUNERALS Mr. H. O. Wills The funeral took place in Bristol yesterday of Mr. Henry Overton Wills. Among the mourners were all the members of the family, including Sir Edward Wills, except the eldest son, Mr. George Wills, Chairman of the Imperial Tobacco Company, and his brother Mr. Stanley Wills, who were unable to return from Norway in time. There was a large congregation in the Cathedral including the Lord Mayor and members of the Corporation and the directors of the Imperial Tobacco Company. He was entombed in the same vault as his wife Alice, who died in December 1881, his son Maitland who was killed by a fall in North Wales in April 1885, his youngest son H.O. The Times Thursday, July 12, 1928 OBITUARY SIR GEORGE WILLS MUNIFICENT GIFTS TO BRISTOL Sir George Wills, Bt., president of the Imperial Tobacco Company and a munificent benefactor to Bristol, and especially Bristol University, died last night at his residence, Burwalls, Leigh Woods, at the age of 74. George Alfred Wills was the head of the eminent Bristol family which has received in quite recent times a peerage (Winterstoke) and four baronetcies. The eldest son of Mr. Henry Overton Wills, he was born on June 3, 1854, was educated at Mill Hill School, and joined in 1874 the family business of W. D. and H. O. Wills, tobacco manufacturers, of Bristol, of which he became managing director. When it was taken over with other firms in 1901 by the Imperial Tobacco Company of Great Britain and Ireland, which was formed for that purpose, he was made deputy-chairman. He succeeded his cousin, the late Lord Winterstoke, as chairman of the Imperial Tobacco Company in 1911, and retired in 1924. The company made great progress under his control, and in recognition of his services the directors invited him to accept the honorary title of president. He was also a director of the Great Western Railway. He was sheriff of Bristol in 1899-1900. Sir George Wills - he was created a baronet in 1923 - maintained the tradition of his family for munificent public benefactions. To the new Bristol University, of which his father was the first Chancellor and the practical founder, he presented two sums of £110,000 and £25,000 in 1924 and 1926 for the erection of a residential hall for men students on the property of Downside, adjoining Durdham Down. This was a memorial to his late brother, Mr. H. M. Wills who originally bought the Downside estate and presented it to the University. He was an active and able chairman of the council, and pro-Chancellor of the University, which made him Hon. LL.D.; he was also hon.. D.C.L. of Oxford. Sir George and his brother presented as a memorial to their father, at a cost of over £500,000, the new main building of the University, opened by the King in 1925, and he gave £25,000 to the Bristol Corporation for the enlargement of the Museum and Art Gallery. He gave £6,000 to Bristol Cathedral for new vestries and a choir practice room, and to the diocese of Bath and Wells - the Bishop is his son-in-law - he gave £5,000 and subsequently £20,000 for increasing clergy stipends. He presented Leigh Woods, on the banks of the Avon, to the National Trust, and he was president of the Bristol General Hospital, to which he made many gifts. In 1921 he was made a freeman of Bristol. At Blagdon, where he usually lived, he carried on the tradition of high farming, and was a successful breeder of Shorthorns. He was a keen angler and a good game shot. Members of the Wills family have left large fortunes. Sir George's father, Mr. H. O. Wills, who died 19 years ago, left £5,200,000, and his cousin, Mr. F. N. H. Wills, left £5,053,360 when he died last October. Nine other members of the family have each left £1,000,000 or more. todo censu 1891+ 1891 Census RG12-1953 3 April 1891 Long Ashton, Somerset Woodlands George A.
