Design overview
I used PovRay, a free tool to create 3D graphic images to construct a model, based on the pictures and videos on the web. One could have used Google's SketchUp free program which would have been easier to learn, but not as good at rendering and moving pieces around. So here is the basic model.
The two large wheels show the time (although I omitted the hour hand and minute marker). Note the (left) hour pulley wheel goes counter clockwise as the weight descends!
The Minute gear tries to turn as the weight descends, but is governed by the gear train that engages with the cyan Crown wheel.
This Crown wheel applies an impulse to the Verge (vertical rod) which spins around its axis, releasing the wheel until it contacts a second pallet arm. The pallet arms line up with the pins on the Crown wheel and are attached to the verge.
The time it takes for the verge to rotate is controlled by the Foliot, in this case a crescent at the top of the verge and a bar at the bottom (an addition by the one built by John Hilgenberg in Perspex to allow more accurate adjustment).One can then move around the model and explode it to see how things fit together.
One can, of course, change the colours and also the scale of any piece.
This was a fun exercise in itself and is a forerunner of the pleasure it will be in constructing the actual clock.
