Dodge and Burn

It is not very easy to show you how good this idea is - but I have taken a simple example and crudely changed it.

The idea is that you create a new layer and then paint Black or White on it instead of using the Dodge and Burn tool.  The advantage of this is that if you make a mistake, it is easy to paint over with Grey, or White and Black.  You really need to try it yourself to see what a good idea it is.

Run my Action 50% Grey

or

Create a New Layer
Layer>New>Layer...
and select Gray colour and Soft Light blending mode and remember to tick the bottom option

You then paint on the new Layer
- Black to darken and White to lighten with a Soft Brush and low Opacity - I used a high 20%
The actual layer will look like this, when you turn off the original Background layer (by clicking on the eye in the layers palette).

Wherever it is 50% Grey there is no change, otherwise the Soft Light Blending mode with lighten or darken as appropriate.

You can always paint in 50% Grey (RGB 128,128,128) to undo you changes.

The other thing you can do is change the Opacity of the Layer to reduce the overall effect.

Incidentally you can also paint with colour to bring out some of the hidden colours in the picture or to tint it.

If the effect if not strong enough, consider changing the blending mode to Overlay.

Thus the before and after images are...
