The idea behind this way of adjusting images is to separate tones, colour and saturation while working in RGB. It allows you more control and you can just concentrate on one attribute of the image at one time.
There is an action that does this on my Actions page, but only gives you two layers.
Here I used a better version which gives this layer structure
note that I did not
use the Saturation layer
The top layer "Tones" is a Curve adjustment layer where by changing the Master RGB curve you only effect the tonal range. This is achieved by setting the Blend mode of the layer to Luminosity (in the one on my actions page) [here the Sharpen layer is set to luminosity and the Tones to Normal blend]
this is the curve I
used
The bottom layer "Colour" allows Curve adjustments of the individual channels WITHOUT changing the tones - much easier to do. This is achieved by setting the layer's blend mode to Color. The adjustments I made to these channels were very minor
nothing in Red
a single point in Green 158:163
and a single point in Blue 188:172
If you flick between this way and any of the standard RGB ones, you will notice that I have succeeded in controlling the haze on the far hills much better (in my opinion!).
In general, unless you want a fair amount of colour saturation, this is way of doing adjustments will give much finer control than using Lab with it's enormous power (which can be difficult to control in delicate curve moves).
