Final Build - 1

Here is the first stage of the final build, with the unfinished frame screwed to an old floorboard clamped to the cupboard door, and the old testing verge.

Unfortunately I had to glue the winding drum elements together in case the fishing line slipped into the joins of the 5 elements.  I also had to glue the ratchet springs in place.  Otherwise everything else (except the frame!) is held together by the connecting pins.

When I am happy with the general layout, then I shall cut the 'O' frame to be a 'C' one.

The centre of the frame is only 5ft high with the centre of the minutes wheel at 4ft 3", only giving a running time of 2 days, 6 hours.  The centre should be higher and then it will be a 3 day clock.

I have added some prototype moveable hands (perhaps too long), in Red, Green and Blue colours (RGB!) and a couple of transparent dials, so that the time can be read accurately.

There is a wee adjusting wheel (with a single spoke - thus achieving 4,3,2,1 spokes) on the verge support, which I've roughly marked for +/- seconds/hour. I'll replace this with a transparent overlay (and show the wood, instead of white) when I have fully calibrated the verge adjustment.

The winding rope can now be left on the clock when it is running as it's cylinder is smooth and varnished, thus being virtually frictionless.

I had to reduce the crescents as the crown wheel is now more vertical and they would have hit the 3rd pinion.

All the insides of the spokes have been painted with hardener in the hope it may help the humidity expansion, but I have not touched the teeth!

The wine bottle is only half full of lead shot (just over 2.5kg, 5.5lbs), so I could go for something smaller - maybe a half bottle.  Also I think it might be a good idea to have the weight attached by a hook, so that I can easily change it.

Now comes the boring bit of calibrating the clock speed for balance weight distance and also verge fore/aft movement.  It may take a month if the humidity keeps jumping all over the place.
