to the Web Tabular Garner

(Garner  - to gather and store, or to amass, acquire)

The idea behind this program is to make web table extraction and storing of tables of data from web sites, simple and easy - use it instead of your Internet Explorer Browser, when going to sites such as IGI, FindMyPast and other 'tabular' data sites.

This program (and web page) were written in 2002 and although still useful, there are now better "Data Mining" products on the web - but I still use WTG frequently (in 2008), so you may also find it does just what you want.

Click here to see a 3 minute (5MB download) video of what WTG is all about.

Download the program WtgSetUp.exe - (less than 100KB). WTG and the download file has been certified completely virus free by McAfee.

You use WTG to browse to the site you want, then press the first (left) button 'Get' to extract the data into a Table.

Not all tables are this simple - the program will also cater for those that have a qualifying lines before blocks of data.

Once you have got the data, as (shown below), you can save it.

Note that the tabulated results can be sorted by clicking on the heading of a column and the column widths re-sized by moving the bar between the headings.

These windows will float over the web page and can be moved, re-sized, minimized or deleted.

The next 're-Show' button displays all the Tables you have saved - notice that you can have many tables with the same name, useful if you keep going back to a site.

With sites like this old 1901 census (it has since changed to be less useful), which return results in multiple pages, once you have extracted and saved the first page of data you can add the remaining pages with a single button press - this really simplifies and speeds up extraction.

Also you use to be able to extract the 'hidden' web references (for instance the 1901 census "Page" and "Person" Id), and then by sorting on PersonID (as shown below) you can get people grouped into households.  You can extract the URLs within the tables from other sites, if they are useful in grouping the data together.

So the program behaves just like your normal Internet Explorer Browser with the additional features that will allow you to

Give the program a wirl and if you like it you can buy it from only £5 (or £3 without support and upgrades) - if you wish to use PayPal, then drop me an email.
