The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant, Designer of the Herald Musician barges: We had 11 official boats carrying a variety of musicians, from the 30m coal barge installed with the temporary belfry and Jubilee bells, to the Symphony banquet boat that closed the pageant with the London Philharmonic and rain-soaked choir. My brief was to decorate the boats using a similar motif to the Royal Barge, but utilising a vastly smaller budget and an aggressive get-in plan of 2 hour timeslots at different moorings along the Thames the day before; all décor then had to be struck straight after the pageant by 8pm that night. It was a real challenge to be creative and bold with such tight timescales in which to realise the designs, with a small budget and an often lengthy approval processes. All these elements made it a very interesting job for me both artistically and logistically, and I feel very honoured and happy to have been able to work on such a historic occasion.
