The inscription on his gravestone allows him only 23 years as vicar, and must be wrong], but being a minor canon of Chester Cathedral, he would be away in any case part of the time. p59.A final criticism made of vicars from these years.... Unfortunately there is no releveant information about Thomas Broadhurst... p62. Such poverty (of vicars) prompted the founding of the "Queens Anne's Bounty"... It appears to have helped at St. Oswald's on a number of occasions, including one in 1774, when three acres of land in Boughton, Chester, of rental value Ð12.12.0, were pruchased "for the specific maintenance of Thomas Broadhurst, clerk, Vicar of Backford"[4=P32/9/1-2 at CRO].".

201839 Sailing Instructions, paper with seal, 1851. " Letter No 1098 London 20th November 1839, 11 St Helens Place Captain Broadhurst, Ship Thomas Bold, Plymouth Dear Sir, We beg to hand you our final instructions for your guidance on receipt of which we request you will proceed with all possible dispatch on your voyage to Sydney,, use every exertion to get away from Plymouth before this fair wind is expended. On arrival at Sydney discharge your cargo with utmost expedition, get your Bills of Lading properly receipted and have all the Freight a/cs payable there settled with the utmost promptitude. We enclose a letter for our correspondents at Sydney Messrs. Edwards & Hunter, who will afford you every facility; unless something very eligible occurs for the investment of what surplus funds you may have, take the best Bills that can be procured on London and remit the same to us by first opportunity. Messrs. Edwards & Hunter will advise you on this head; retain in available cash what you think requisite for the ship's disbursements. You have herewith Invoices of 26 New Butts, and 6 Hog-head of Geneva, which dispose of as best advantage, on ship's a/cs, we also send some additional duplicate invoices to ship's stores, if you find rope or any other surplus stores selling well, turn them into cash. We omitted to caution you before leaving London, on the point that we request your attention to. Colonial built ships are sometimes found to make a little water and masters not conversant with them in order to ascertain the cause strip off the copper. This ought never to be done, we consider the "Tho Bold" one of the finest ships ever built in Americas, should however, contrary to our expectations any trifling leakage occur we expressly forbid the copper to be removed. We call your attention to this subject, in consequence of the eagerness promptly shown in foreign ports to make work for shipwrights, you will therefore we feel assured, be on your guard. The very unsettled state of affairs in China renders your going there with so large a ship, at that period of the year, a very hazardous matter. The same objections exist respecting our ship "Crescent", Capt. Goldie, you will therefore lose no time in handing him the letter No 1095 entrusted to your care, and sent herewith, as it contains our orders respecting his future proceedings. Your course is more certain and defined, we have obtained a charter home from Bombay for the "Thomas Bold", you will therefore after leaving Sydney proceed though Torres Straits, and make every exertion to reach Bombay with an hour's delay, indeed should you get there before the charterers /Messrs. MacVicar Burn & Co./ have hired warehouses to store your homeward cargo we shall allow you Ð50 extra, to push the ship along. We send for your information, a few hints respecting Torres Straits from an experienced navigator. On arriving at Bombay, you will find a copy of the Charter Party, which strictly attend to; pray stow the ship to the greatest possible advantage, use the screws etc. as only a large cargo, at the very low rate of freight, will pay. Keep your Sydney ballast on board unless sugar or saltpetre offers at Bombay sufficient to stiffen her with a cotton cargo. Advise us by every opportunity of your proceedings. The midshipman and an intermediate passenger complain of their hard fate do what you can to make all comfortable. Send us from Plymouth a correct list of your crew and accept our best wishes for your welfare and speedy return. Believe us Yours faithfully Gardner Marshall & Co." Typed copy of the letter is headed 'Original in the procession of Frank Firth) and has annotated on it 'July 20th 1943. Ask Firth for the original of this, it is ours not his. CAB'. Actually the Firth's have as much right to this as we do, as it was one of their ancestors too!.

211839 Sailing Instructions, paper with seal, 1851.
