Churches and Cathedrals

If you are as enthusiastic as I am about Churches and Cathedrals, then enjoy some of their images from these pages.

It would be great to have photos of all the churches mentioned in the books, "England's Thousand Best Churches" by Simon Jenkins and "Parish Churches as Works of Art" by Alec Clifton-Taylor - but I'm too old and will never get around to seeing even half of them.

Now that I've seen quite a few of the Jenkins's churches, I think his marking system is not very good.  We have seen some one-stars that are fantastic and some four/five stars which are not very moving - so take him with a pinch of salt  He also has some mistakes, for instance we've found four churches (so far) with wooden pillar/piers and he says there are only 2 in the country!

Here are some of my favourites

Parish Churches

As you move your mouse over the bright yellow counties on the map, it will change to a hand, then click to get a list of all the lovely Parish Churches (mentioned in the above books)  in that county and from that list you can click on those with a link to view the images.

Unfortunately this map, and subsequent lists, will be very sparse, but it will grow in time.

Some churches have been photographed in detail and contain many images, but others just have a few images and so have been grouped together in 'album' pages.

Those churches which show detailed images (that you can zoom and pan around) may take a wee while to load - but be patient as the final image is well worth the wait.

In may interest you, if you are a photographer, how I take photos of churches.  Basically because of the dynamic range (very light and dark areas), it is generally not possible to capture everything in a single exposure, especially stained glass windows.  So I take 3 photos at -2ev, 0ev and +2ev and then combine them to pick the detail from the best shot.  If you have Photoshop (or other software) and this interests you, then drop me a line and I'll show you how I do it.
